PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

     The Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in Mathematics (BSEd- Mathematics) is a four-year undergraduate program that prepares students to teach mathematics at the secondary level. The program covers a wide range of topics, including:

• Mathematical concepts and principles

• Mathematical problem-solving

• Mathematical modeling

• Data analysis and interpretation

• Classroom management

• Assessment

• Professional development

     Students in the BSEd- Mathematics  program also have the opportunity to participate in field experiences, such as student teaching, which allow them to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.

The Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics Program aims to provide training and practice that will enable students to: 

• Demonstrate competence in mathematical concepts and procedures and proficiency    in problem-solving as well as creating routine and non-routine problems with different levels of complexity.

• Exhibit proficiency in relating mathematics to other curricular areas.

• Articulate the rootedness of education in philosophical, socio-cultural, historical, psychological, and political contexts and discuss the latest developments and innovations in mathematics education.

• Develop innovative curricula, instructional plans, teaching approaches, and resources for diverse learners.

• Demonstrate competence in designing, constructing, and utilizing different forms of assessment as well as meaningful and comprehensive technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) of mathematics.

• Demonstrate competence in mathematical concepts and procedures and proficiency    in problem-solving as well as creating routine and non-routine problems with different levels of complexity.

• Use effectively appropriate approaches, methods, and techniques in teaching mathematics including technological tools

• Develop innovative curricula, instructional plans, teaching approaches, and resources for diverse learners.

• Work effectively and collaboratively with a substantial degree of independence in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams

• Demonstrate mastery of subject matter/discipline and appreciate mathematics as an opportunity for creative work, moments of enlightenment, discovery and gaining insights of the world

• Practice professional and ethical teaching standards sensitive to the local, national, and global realities.
